Meet Bo Butner's JHG Team: Robert Freeman

This team is packed from top to bottom with individuals who love what they do, and engine man Robert Freeman is right there at the forefront with a ton of experience and even more passion for the sport of drag racing.

At the racetrack, Robert takes care of the engine maintenance on the Johnson’s Horsepowered Garage Chevrolet Camaro, but at heart, Robert is a racer himself. He’s a Division 4 Competition Eliminator champion and won the Allstars for his division in 2003. Although he doesn’t race regularly anymore, he’s been driving off-and-on since his first national event in 1991.

The Camaro that he drove back then was the same car he drove to college. When he graduated, he worked to make it a street car and eventually NHRA legal.

“My dad started this back in the day,” said Robert, referring to his father, Royce Freeman Sr. “He used to run Pro Stock in the early 70s, and when we were kids, we’d go to the races with him.”

Did Robert ever aspire to follow in his father’s footsteps?

“To an extent,” he said. “I always wanted to do one of these, but I never had the funds, and you have to be in them every day to be good. It’s really easy to drive them from standing behind them, but I never criticize anybody. We win as a team, lose as a team.”
